Can celiac disease be the cause of stomach problems?
There are an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 celiacs in Finland who do not know they have the disease. Symptoms of celiac disease can include various stomach problems or skin symptoms. Celiac disease can also be asymptomatic for a long time, or its symptoms cannot be linked to the disease, but lactose intolerance is suspected, for example.
Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) is an autoimmune disease of the small intestine, in which the gluten protein triggers the body's own defense mechanism. Typical symptoms of celiac disease are bloating and diarrhea, which are caused by a reaction to the gluten protein used in many foods. The following symptoms can also be a sign of celiac disease: weight loss, malnutrition and skin symptoms.
